According to the SEND Code of Practice 2015, sensory and physical needs include vision impairment, deafness or hearing loss, multi-sensory impairment (i.e. both a permanent hearing loss and a permanent vision impairment), and physical disabilities.  Children may need adjustments, additional support, equipment and/or adaptations to access learning and social opportunities.

This information is particularly relevant for practitioners working with children in the early years or those at a similar developmental stage.

Practitioners should adopt a strengths-based approach to celebrate individual skills and successes and take into account the preferences, views and aspirations of the child and their family.
