Formulation – Planning Interventions for Complex Children: Where to Start and How to Go

Tuesday 17 March
9:30am–12:30pm
Location: Unipart House, Garsington Rd, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG

In this session we will explore developing a formulation of a child’s needs: a formulation links theory and practice and should guide intervention and evaluation. It is a way of exploring what we know and don’t yet know, reflecting on how we construct our understanding, and generating hypotheses to test through intervention.

This can be a helpful way to think about children who have a number of different needs and is a way to involve the child, their family and other processionals in your thinking and planning.

Best Practice for Schools on Working with Adoptive and Special Guardian Children and Families

Tuesday 28 April
9:30am–12:30pm
Location: Unipart House, Garsington Rd, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2PG

Adopted and special guardian children bring with them a history of loss and change. For some, this includes experiences of abuse, neglect, and trauma. It might feel difficult to understand the impact of these experiences, particularly if a child has been living in a safe and secure environment.

It is not inevitable that children who have been adopted or are in special guardianship arrangements will experience extra difficulties. But by learning about the potential impact of children’s earliest experiences on their development and strategies to support, school staff will be in a better position to identify and respond to difficulties if they do emerge.

This session is suitable for DTs, DSLs, Inclusion/Pastoral Staff, Mental Health Leads and SENDCOs.

Delivered by:
Dr Hester Riviere, Senior Specialist Educational Psychologist, ATTACH Team.

Transitions Training

Tuesday 28 April
1:00pm–3:30pm
Online

We all undergo a range of changes in our lives. These can often lead to feelings of uncertainty but can also be viewed as an opportunity to develop resilience.

By proactively preparing children and young people for a transition, we can provide a sense of security, containment and understanding, which can ease these emotions and secure positive outcomes.

This course is designed for professionals working with a range of ages and across various settings, to equip them with practical skills to support smooth transitions in different contexts. We will consider larger transitions (moving between key stages, moving between schools, etc.) alongside seemingly smaller transitions (moving between different learning spaces, being supported by different adults, etc.).

PACE for School Staff

Tuesday 12 May
9:30am–12:30pm

Tuesday 2 June
9:30am–11:30am

Location: The Branch Trust, 16 Market Place, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, OX7 5NA

PACE is an approach developed by Dr Dan Hughes, an American psychologist who works with traumatised children. PACE stands for Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy.

Being PACEful enables you to have effective, empowering interactions with children who have experienced trauma and who, as a result, do not respond to you in the same way as other children you teach. It is a useful classroom tool for all children, not just those who have had a difficult start to life.

Over these two sessions, teachers and TAs will learn more about this approach and its context in school practice. The second part provides a reflective workshop space to practise using PACE.
