ARCh Assisted Reading for Children supports children with 1:1 reading support for a full year
ARCh Reading Mentors come into school for up to 2 sessions a week for each child to lead 1:1 reading sessions focusing on reading, confidence and wellbeing, giving each child a year of regular support. All Reading Mentors receive initial training and ongoing support from an ARCh Field Worker.
Initial training covers key areas including the process of learning to read, reasons children may struggle, how to be an effective Reading Mentor, Safeguarding, and how to best use their selection of ARCh resources. Reading Mentors are fully resourced by ARCh, and we manage the entire Safer Recruitment process, including enhanced DBS and reference checks, as well as all paperwork required to place a Reading Mentor in school. In addition to initial training, optional ongoing workshops are offered throughout the year on subjects such as Oracy, Neurodiversity, and other related areas.
ARCh also emphasises the importance of using games and engaging activities to support reading development. To ensure quality and consistency, observation visits are conducted by an ARCh Field Worker, providing guidance and support to Reading Mentors.
A number of the ARCh staff team are former teachers, bringing first-hand experience and a deep understanding of the challenges schools face. ARCh takes care of everything – all we ask is that schools select up to three children to receive ARCh support.
