WOW – The Walk to School Challenge

Oxfordshire County Council are partnering with Living Streets to provide FREE resources and support to encourage pupils in Oxfordshire schools to walk scoot and cycle to school.    

What’s in it for your school?

Taking up your FULLY FUNDED school place on WOW creates great results:

  • Reduced traffic congestion around your school. Most schools experience around a 30% drop in car numbers outside the school gates
  • Reduced air pollution in your neighbourhood
  • An opportunity for pupils and parents to include some physical activity in their day, and to celebrate and reward positive behaviour. Active trips to school rise on average by 23%
  • Robust monitoring and evaluation providing evidence of engagement for OFSTED, Healthy Schools, Modeshift STARS, and Eco Schools accreditations
  • The possibility of more intensive activity at the school to promote active travel or explore the means of improving the walking environment around your school

 The WOW package includes:  

  • A different badge each month for all children who actively travel at least once a week, until July 2025. A welcome pack, including welcome resources, classroom guides and a WOW poster.
  • Access to our fun and interactive online Travel Tracker where pupils will record how they travelled to school each day. The Travel Tracker also encourages friendly competition between classes – who will top the active travel leaderboard each month? The online system will allow your school to monitor modes of travel and shifts towards active journeys
  • Further support to promote walking including an introductory virtual launch assembly and set-up support to kick off the challenge

Please note, there are a limited number of funded places for schools and these funded places are being offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Schools can only be accepted if they have not received funding for WOW in the last three years.
