Making Travel Accessible: Our new Independent Travel Training programme for young people with SEND

Our Independent Travel Training Programme (ITT) is designed to support young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities to use public transport independently.

The programme enables young people to obtain knowledge of a planned route, attain a high level of road safety skills, develop their social awareness and problem-solving abilities. All centred around their individual needs and on a 1-1 basis. The journey is a set home to school/college route which we take together in real time so there is no impact on school/college.

As confidence and skills are gained, we make a step by step, gradual withdraw until the young person is completing the whole journey independently. We encourage the young person to check in regularly with parents/carers. Extensive work takes place on stranger awareness and social skills. We use standard and personalised “What If” scenarios to prepare for when things don’t go to plan!
