OCC Schools Medical Needs Policy
Dear Head Teacher,
We are seeking your views on the proposed OCC Schools Medical Needs policy (docx,45kb) to improve educational access and support for students who are unable to attend school due to physical or mental ill health. This consultation is part of our commitment to ensuring that every child receives a suitable high-quality education at school or otherwise, regardless of their health circumstances.
Many students face temporary or long-term health conditions that prevent them from attending school regularly. The policy aims to ensure that children of compulsory school age who are unable to attend school due to physical or mental ill health receive a suitable education with the right support.
It outlines the responsibilities of:
- Oxfordshire County Council (OCC)
- Schools
- Parents and carers
It emphasises:
- Early identification and referral of students with medical needs.
- Minimising disruption to learning.
- Supporting reintegration into school when health permits.
- Ensuring students remain connected to their school community.
Consultation Questions - we welcome your views on the following:
- Do you agree with the overall aims of the proposed policy?
- What aspects of the policy do you support?
- Are there any areas you feel need improvement or clarification?
- What challenges do you foresee in implementing this policy?
- Do you have any additional suggestions or comments?
Deadline for responses: 6 June 2025 - 5pm
