SATS Analysis Workshop Plus FREE CPD for 2024/25

BBO Maths Free SATS analysis workshop: Friday 12 July

BBO Maths Hub is holding a free SATS analysis workshop. For Maths Leaders, Year 6 teachers, Year 7 teachers. We are offering the opportunity for Primary schools to look at some common features within the 2024 SATs and analyse your own papers. Secondary schools are invited too, to support transition knowledge.

  • How can you use common themes from Year 6 pupils to develop your maths curriculum for next year as they move into Year 7?
  • What were the common errors and misconceptions?
  • What can primary schools learn from how their pupils’ tackled questions and implement in their planning for next year?
  • What can secondaries learn about the current Y6 pupils- what can we put in place for them in Y7?

You will also be invited to join Basecamp where you can view pupils’ responses to questions and submit your own examples to work on within the session.

Primary schools: Please ensure that you have downloaded scripts of a range of pupils prior to the session as you will have the opportunity to work on these with others and analyse pupil approaches.

Secondary Schools: The KS2 2024 SATs maths papers will be available for viewing on Basecamp from 11 July. Please register via our website.

Mastering Number at KS2: Apply by 28 June

What is involved?

Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum and is the gateway to success at secondary school. This project enables pupils in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense. Professional development materials will be provided to cover five short sessions a week, with participants expected to support colleagues in their year groups to use the resources with all Year 4 and 5 classes.

Who can take part?

This project is for schools that are involved in Mastering Number at Reception and KS1, and are also in a Sustaining Work Group. Lead participants from Work Group schools will be two teachers – one from each of Year 4 and Year 5. Support will also be given to maths leads and headteachers.

 What will you learn?

  • Your pupils in KS2 will develop automaticity in multiplication and division facts through regular practice
  • You will develop an understanding of how pupils progress in their knowledge and understanding of multiplicative concepts
  • You will work as part of a professional learning community to refine your practice
  • You and your school leaders will develop Mastering Number at KS2 as part of the curriculum in Years 4 and 5

What is the cost?

The Mastering Number at KS2 Work Groups are fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so are free to participating schools. Applications are now open for 2024-2025, click here to apply online.

Submit your application now to join the teaching for mastery - development project in 2024/25.

Every year, the Maths Hub looks to engage schools that have not yet begun the Teaching for Mastery journey in the project, and we are delighted to announce that applications have now opened to take part in 2024/25. The Teaching for Mastery Programme is a professional development opportunity designed to support teachers in state-funded schools to develop best practice in maths in your school. It is suitable for schools interested in implementing a teaching for mastery approach to maths. Mastering maths means pupils of all ages acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths. Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.

There is a wealth of information about Mastery on the NCETM website. To find out more visit our website using the links below:

For primary schools that are not quite ready to join the project yet, we also have the Mastery Readiness programme which will prepare for implementing a teaching for mastery approach.

We are looking for work group leads to deliver:

Developing Core Maths Pedagogy v Cross-Phase

Supporting Students to Achieve a L2 Qualification in Maths BBO Maths Hub would like to find new Work Group Leads to join our Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLME) community and to work with groups of teachers from across our area to develop the teaching and learning that happen in their schools. These roles are ideal for teachers who have been teaching in these areas for a few years and are confident in their own subject knowledge and pedagogy. As a Work Group Lead you would not only join our LLME community but also be part of a national community allowing you to further develop your skills and hear about what other experienced teachers are doing in their schools to improve teaching and learning. Working with our community will not only give you the chance to work with teachers beyond your own school but develop your skills and broaden your ideas which you can then bring back to your own school. As part of working with you we would sponsor you to do the Professional Development Lead Accreditation (PD Lead) to enhance your skills when creating, delivering and evaluating Continuous Professional Development (CPD). This would need to happen either in the first or second year of you leading the Work Group. Further details about this can be found here.

The time commitment is 4 days over the academic year and your school/college would be given £800 to help with cover costs. The details of these roles, including time commitment and funding can be found by clicking the links above.

If you are interested in applying please first check that your school would be willing to release you to lead the group and attend the training events then apply by e-mail which should be cc’d to your headteacher and include:

  • Your name
  • Your e-mail
  • Your TRN
  • School or College
  • Work history which is relevant to the role
  • Why you think you should be considered for the role
  • Details of your current line manager in case we want to find out more about your experience and skills

Note: if you are part time and thinking of doing this on your days off that some of the training and community events you would need to attend will be on teaching days so you would still need to talk to your Headteacher to get their agreement to release you on those days.

If you have any questions or wish to apply, please contact BBO Maths Hub (info@bbomathshub.org.uk) marked for the attention of Jo Walker.

The deadline to apply is 27 June. We hope that these opportunities are of interest and look forward to working with you soon. The BBO Maths Hub team.
