New OCC SEND Indicators Tool to support identification of SEND

The new OCC SEND Indicators Tool is designed to support schools with early identification of SEND to support early intervention. The tool is a strengths-based model to identify what pupils can do and develop understanding for staff of what pupils’ next steps are.

What can you use the SEND Indicators Tool for?

  • The first step in class teachers’ consideration of whether a pupil needs to be on the SEND register. It encourages triangulation of information gathered in school, parent and pupil views, and what is already in place for the pupil with the scores on the tool
  • To review the needs of pupils whose needs have evolved over time as part of the assess, plan, do, review process in order to refine provision to meet their needs
  • To review the progress of pupils in relation to particular areas of development identified as part of the original scoring. Dates can be added to demonstrate when particular skills are acquired to demonstrate progress.
  • To support moderation of the SEND register
  • To support discussions with class teachers about who needs to be on the SEND register in conjunction with other information in school, SEND reviews, pupil and parent views and professional input
  • Ways to start integrating the use of the SEND Indicators Tool in your school.

Ask class teachers to use it (instead of the old OCC SEN Guidance descriptors) when they are concerned about a pupil and think they may need to access SEN Support - Use it to review the needs of pupils where there have been changes in need or barriers to learning - Focus on reviewing all pupils within one broad area of need at a time.

Where pupils already have pupil profiles or similar, you only need to capture new information on the ‘information form’ tab
