Manipulatives and representations in mathematics for Teaching Assistants / Support Staff

Using manipulatives or representations (such as base 10 / Deines, ten frames and rekenreks) effectively in teaching is key for children to develop a secure understanding of the concepts and processes that they will encounter in their mathematics lessons.

This session is designed for teaching assistants / learning support assistants who work with individuals or groups of children. It will explore the key manipulatives and representations that really make a difference to children’s learning in number and calculation across the primary phase.

The course will explore how these can be used to support children’s understanding and their use will be demonstrated with reference to key early number concepts, place value, and the four operations of number.
