Health and Safety: Asbestos Management

Please note that the Council has updated the following health and safety information:

  • Asbestos Policy and Management Plan: This sets out our corporate approach to managing asbestos containing materials across the corporate estate including maintained schools.
  • Asbestos Folder and Site-Specific Asbestos Management Plan:  This should be completed by the responsible person at the school and used to update the site asbestos management folder. It must reflect the specific arrangements for managing asbestos at your school. You should include the latest asbestos information which can be obtained from SHINE or alternatively contact the FMServicedesk@oxfordshire.gov.uk.

The key information you should refer to include:

  • The Asbestos Management Survey
  • The last Asbestos Reinspection Report and Asbestos Register Copies of Asbestos Location Plans

The Council is not responsible for academy schools. You should contact your Academy Trust to obtain copies of the Trust’s Asbestos Policy and copies of any asbestos surveys or reports etc.

The HSE is currently undertaking a national programme of inspection of schools to assess the management arrangements to control the risks associated with Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs). Several schools in Oxfordshire have been visited already.

During the visit the HSE will review documentation relevant to your management arrangements in respect of the ACMs within the school premises including any asbestos surveys, risk assessments, asbestos register and asbestos management plan. It is important you have asbestos information up to date and that key persons are aware of their responsibilities.

Further information is available on the HSE website.
