Advice from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue

In the news this week we have seen the terrible footage of children playing on a level crossing in Oxfordshire. We must strongly suggest that a level crossing is not a playground and we have this advice:

  • STOP – never just wonder onto tracks as you may not hear the train until it is too late.
  • LOOK – you can see a train (albeit very small) from a mile or so away, however, this 1 mile can be covered by a train in just 30 seconds!
  • LISTEN – the tracks can make a ‘pinging’ noise when a train is approaching at speed, again however, this can only be heard when a train is approximately ¼ mile away. (Distance to travel in time, 7.5 seconds).
