FSM for eligible Nursery children

Headteachers, Governors, Early Years Leads, Nursery teachers
Are some of our most deprived Nursery children in Oxfordshire missing out on their FSM entitlement?

‘Whilst the pandemic has shone a spotlight on the importance of FSM in schools, nursery aged children have been left out of these debates, despite being at greater risk of poverty and in a particularly sensitive period of development.’(As food poverty is set to soar, how many free school meals reach under-fives?' - Education Policy Institute - epi.org.uk)

By law, local authority run schools and academies are required to offer a free school meal to eligible nursery children. Schools with governor, private or charity run provision are not required to offer a free school meal.

To be eligible a Nursery aged child must attend a maintained nursery school or class, attend for a full day and be in receipt of one of the qualifying benefits.
