Explore new ideas and gain work experience

This placement with Innovate Oxfordshire is all about exploring new ideas, solving real-world problems, and discovering how innovation can make a difference. It’s designed to give you a supportive introduction to the world of work, while helping you build confidence and learn skills that will stay with you for life.

You don’t need experience, just curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to get involved.

What you will do

During your placement, you’ll spend time learning how Oxfordshire County Council looks at challenges in new ways and finds better solutions for residents.

You’ll get to work alongside people who are testing ideas, using new and improving technology, and collaborating with different organisations to improve services. You might be involved in discussions about new ideas, helping with small tasks on projects, or learning how data and technology are used to support decisions.

You’ll also see how teams work together across different organisations – including universities, businesses and other public sector teams – to bring fresh thinking into the council.

What you will gain

This placement is a chance to grow your confidence, understanding of the working world and discover what you’re capable of.

You’ll develop skills that employers value, including communication, teamwork, problem solving and thinking creatively. You’ll also build experience of working in a professional environment and get a better understanding of how organisations use innovation to make things better.

Most importantly, you’ll be encouraged to share your ideas, reflect on what you’ve learned, and gain confidence in your own voice and abilities.

Where and when you will work

You’ll be based at Westgate in Oxford, in a modern and collaborative working environment.

The placement runs for eight weeks, with two working days per week (days to be agreed). You’ll work from 9:30am to 5:00pm, giving you a total of 14 hours per week. This flexible setup will make it easier for you to work around prior commitments.

Support during your placement

We understand that starting something new can feel like a big step, so you’ll be fully supported throughout your placement.

You’ll work with a friendly and welcoming team who will guide you, answer your questions and help you gradually build your confidence. You’ll be encouraged to learn at your own pace, try new things and develop skills that will support your future.
