Start your journey into work

If you’re looking for your first step into the world of work, this could be the perfect place to begin.

At Oxfordshire County Council, we understand that everyone’s journey is different. That’s why we’re offering a supported work placement designed especially for care leavers. This is your chance to gain real experience, build your confidence, and learn skills that will help you move forward into whatever step you decide to take, be it education, training or employment.

You will only need curiosity, a willingness to learn, and an interest in working with people.

What you will do

You’ll spend 4 weeks with our Customer Service Team, gaining a real insight into what it’s like to work in a professional environment where every day is about helping those who live, work or visit Oxfordshire.

You’ll learn how to support residents, businesses and visitors across Oxfordshire, gaining hands-on experience in customer service. You’ll have the opportunity to speak to people over the phone, respond to emails and see how our face-to-face services work, all while being supported by a friendly and welcoming team.

What you will gain

This placement will give you skills that you can take with you and use anywhere.

By the end of the placement, you’ll have developed a strong foundation in workplace skills and a clearer understanding of what a career in customer service or local government could look like.

You’ll gain confidence in speaking with others, learn how to manage your time, and build experience you can add to your CV or talk about in future applications.

Most importantly, you’ll leave ready, and with the knowledge that you can truly succeed in a workplace environment.

Where and when you will work

This placement will take place at County Hall in Oxford (over the road from the Westgate Centre), with easy access by foot if you live locally or by bus and train from surrounding areas.

You’ll be with us for four weeks, working Monday to Friday for up to 37 hours per week.

Support during your placement

We offer unrivalled support to all of our colleagues. Primarily, you’ll be supported by your placement manager Richard Merritt, and a team who are there to help you learn, grow and feel comfortable every step of the way. We also have an Early Careers team who are dedicated to ensuring you are supported on your journey.

This is a safe, supportive space where you’re encouraged to ask questions, try new things, and develop at your own pace.

Who this placement is for

This opportunity is ideal if you want to build your confidence, gain work experience, and take the next step towards your future whilst learning just a little bit about what the Council do and what it’s like to work in local Government.

Whether you’re still figuring out what you want to do or already have an interest in working with people, this placement is designed to help you move forward.
