SACRE online events for RE - March – July 2024

Headteacher briefing: Meeting the statutory requirements to provide high quality religious education

According to Ofsted’s annual report (Nov 2023) “RE in schools is generally of poor quality. Although it is a statutory subject, schools often consider RE as an afterthought. As a subject on the curriculum, it is under-valued. RE is a complex subject… All pupils should develop a broad and secure knowledge of the complexity of religious and non-religious traditions.”

Outline:

  • Why RE is too important to ignore
  • What are the issues?
  • Oxfordshire Standing Advisory Council on RE’s (SACRE) Agreed Syllabus
  • How can we improve the quality of RE so that our pupils and students are well-prepared for life in an increasingly complex and diverse world?

Description:

This is a free webinar led by Bill Moore, Adviser to SACRE, for Primary, Secondary and Special School Headteachers of LA Maintained Schools, Academies and Free Schools. It will be in the form of a presentation with discussion and questions. We will discuss the statutory nature of RE in the curriculum and the bigger picture of what it has to offer our young people, our schools and our society. You will have a brief overview of the Oxfordshire Agreed Syllabus, its remit, vision and rationale. Finally, we will explore how we can improve the quality of RE in Oxfordshire schools.

Outcomes:

You will have a better understanding of the nature and importance of RE in the school curriculum and how to support your RE lead in providing a coherent and meaningful RE curriculum for your pupils and students.
