Updated guidance on eligibility and spending criteria for PE & Sport Premium Funding 2018/19

The Government has updated the guidance for the Primary School PE & Sport Premium Funding for 2018/19. This includes eligibility, how to access funding, and suggested use/spend.

Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6.

Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £1,000 per pupil.

Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport you offer.

You should not use your funding to:

  • employ coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements – these should come out of your core staffing budgets
  • teach the minimum requirements of the national curriculum – with the exception of top-up swimming lessons after pupils’ completion of core lessons (or, in the case of academies and free schools, to teach your existing PE curriculum)
  • fund capital expenditure
