Library volunteering for students this summer

KS3 and 4: Headteachers, Librarians
Volunteers required for the Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Help young people in your school develop their confidence and gain work experience by informing them of the opportunity to volunteer in their local library to help with the Summer Reading Challenge 2018 ‘Mischief Makers’.

Not only will they make a positive contribution to their local community, by encouraging children to read, they will obtain good evidence for their CV’s and Personal Statements. They can also use the experience for the ‘community’ element of the Duke of Edinburgh award.

The opportunities are for young people aged 13-24, at any time from 14 July – 15 September.

The young people will receive training and support to make it an enjoyable volunteering experience, and will work to enhance the experience for the children and families competing in the reading challenge. Other tasks include:

  • Signing children up to the challenge and administering rewards
  • Promoting ‘Mischief Makers’ and the Reading Agency website to families and children
  • Putting up displays
  • Topping up book displays
  • Helping children to choose books
  • Helping to plan and carry out themed activities such as craft sessions or story times

Young people who would like to get involved should contact their local library, or visit www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/libraries
