Introduction to OSCB Chair- Derek Benson

All Schools
Derek would like to say hello

I have been asked to introduce myself as the new independent chair of the Oxfordshire Safeguarding Children Board. It’s a role I started in November 2020 so, as you can imagine, all my work to date has been ‘virtual’ and I have yet to meet any of my colleagues in person! That said, everyone has been really helpful and patient as I learn more about Oxfordshire.

This new way of working presents its own challenges but also offers a new-found flexibility and a lot less travelling, as I am also the chair for a number of other local safeguarding children boards and safeguarding adult boards. I have been working as an independent chair since leaving a career in policing in 2015 where, as the deputy chief constable for Essex police, my portfolio included public protection and of course, safeguarding.

I am a passionate advocate for the wellbeing and safety of our children and young people, and my experiences over the last few years have shown me just how professional, dedicated and compassionate those involved in safeguarding are. It is an honour to be trusted with this role and I hope that together we can continue to make a positive difference to the lives of the children and young people of Oxfordshire.
