Safe practice in school swimming policy, guidance and procedures

Our Safe Practice in School Swimming Policy, Guidance and Procedures June 2018 (pdf format, 423Kb) has been developed to under pin School Swimming in Oxfordshire and should be used at all times to guide schools in the safe practice of school swimming.  Governors will need to complete a school swimming Governor checklist 2018-19 form (docx format, 105Kb)

Training - Swimming Qualifications Support 

Support Teacher of School Swimming 

The Support Teacher of School Swimming Course is a minimum requirement for all staff who accompany pupils to swimming lessons in Oxfordshire.

This Swim England certificated course comprises the National Curriculum Training Programme and is recognised by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and by the Professional Development Board for Physical Education.

What?

  • Core Module 1: Roles, responsibilities and relationships; Health and safety; safeguarding and protecting children; organisation of the learning environment.
  • Core Module 2: Physical development; developing key underpinning skills; introduction to strokes.
  • Primary Module: Swimming and water safety in the national curriculum.

Led by a Swim England Licensed Tutor, this course consists of 6 hours contact time and includes theory and practical. It provides lots of fun ideas for teaching non swimmers through to more advanced swimmers; examples of how to deliver swimming through aquatics; ideas for X-Curricular activities; the opportunity to explore and use a wide range of resources.

Who can attend?

Teachers, TA’s, LSA’s, DBS checked school staff, Trainee Primary School Teachers.

Pre requisites

  • Candidates MUST be able to swim and be confident and competent in the water.
  • Candidates are required to hold a current DBS certificate.

How much?

£185 (including refreshments, Swim England course materials and certification). Cancellations less than 14 days prior to the start date of the course will be charged in full.

Teacher of School Swimming

Why?

The Swim England Support Teacher of School Swimming Course (previously titled Fundamentals of School Swimming) MUST be completed before undertaking this course.

This certificated course completes the Swim England National Curriculum Training Programme and is recognised by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and by the Professional Development Board for Physical Education.

What?

  • Core Module 3: planning, preparing and delivery of aquatic sessions; core aquatic skills; stroke faults and progressive practices.
  • Primary Module: additional skills; key aspects of progression, attainment and assessment; practical observation (candidates teaching pupils).

Led by a Swim England Licensed Tutor, this course consists of 10 hours contact time and includes theory and practical. This course will usually be delivered over 2 x 5hr sessions.

Teachers, TA’s, LSA’s, DBS checked school staff, Trainee Primary School Teachers.

Pre requisites:

  • Candidates MUST have completed the Swim England Support Teacher of School Swimming before undertaking this course.

How much?

Two day course (Day 1 – 1pm to 5pm and Day 2 – 10am to 3pm)

£195 (including refreshments, Swim England course materials and certification). Cancellations less than 14 days prior to the start date of the course will be charged in full.

Safeguarding Qualifications

The Oxfordshire Safeguarding Children Board (OSCB) offers training and guidance for all staff working with young children.  Please make sure that your swimming staff hold a valid Safeguarding certificate.

Schools may be organising school training for school based staff please remember to invite your swimming teachers/Instructors along as well.

Generalist Safeguarding or Specialist Safeguarding Training can be booked with OSCB.
